BentgrassGrass

Course Update for May 1, 2015

The warm weather has finally arrived, and it looks like it is here to stay. Over the last week you can see a dramatic change throughout the golf course, and conditions are only going to get better. The turf team has been hard at work finishing off the remainder of the construction around the new range, and I am happy to say it is now complete. The sod and hydroseeding were finished yesterday, cleaning up the front entrance to the property. I hope everyone is enjoying the new hitting net, and in the next couple of weeks I will be opening…

Course Update for April 20, 2015

Over the last two weeks the weather has been on our side. With the warmer temperatures and timely rains the turf has started to grow. If you haven’t been on the property in the last seven days you will notice a significant green-up throughout the course. The last 18 months have probably felt like a lifetime for everyone, not being able to play the full course for different reasons. But with your patience and support to bringing the greens at Islington to a new level, I am excited to say the golf course will open for play on all 18…

BentgrassGrassWinter

Course Update for April 2, 2015

It has been a long and cold winter, but the shining sun is a great indication that spring is just around the corner. For those of you who haven’t been to the course in the last couple of weeks, I am happy to tell you the new greens have wintered very well. We pulled the tarps off last week and saw that nice dormant brown look of the new bentgrass. The main difference you will notice this spring of the new greens is how brown and dormant the bentgrass is compared to the old poa. With a couple of days…

Course Update for August 14, 2013

We have made great progress with the construction over the last four days, and with the long range forecast looking positive we should make some great strides over the next two weeks. Since items are moving forward at a rapid pace I wanted to give the membership another quick update. #11 green has now been graded, bluegrass sod has been laid around the green, and the new bentgrass seed has been applied. With the cool nights and warm days, the green should be germinated within the next 10-14 days. The roughs on the 11th hole are almost complete, and by…

GeeseGrass

Course Update for August 10, 2012

As one of the most dominant bird species in Canada, Canada Geese are often times considered pests, especially on golf courses. Getting rid of them…not so easy. Managing geese populations on golf courses is very challenging. Our control strategy is based on an integrated approach program. Using a number of different techniques and understanding behaviours gives us the tools to control populations more effectively. It is important to recognize that even though all geese have the same biology, their behavioral characteristics change amongst flocks. Therefore understanding specific group behaviours can be very beneficial for control. It is also very important to be able to…

Course Update for July 27, 2012

It has been a few weeks since my last course report but with an inch of rain and some cooler temperatures, I thought it would be a good time to update everyone on the health of the poa putting greens and some upcoming maintenance procedures we will be completing to alleviate some stress the greens have been under. Over the last few weeks the poa greens have been struggling to survive in these high/humid temperatures, and some thinning of turf has occurred. The team has been in defensive mode, babysitting and nursing the poa to reduce the amount of turf…
